When I showed my earlier strips of this story to my mom, she said that Iikutaat looked like he had more human proportions than the other characters did. So now I'm trying to keep him more Real Person-y, except for the three fingers and a thumb (characteristic of cartoons) and the lack of nipples (I'm not fully sure about this one; maybe it had something to do with an ancient ritual for males).
I'll be honest. When I said that today's strip would be a little late, I didn't expect it to be this late.
Today's strip is actually the third in a line of ideas for Julia's Secret Friend. The first was a "Mystical Disembodied Voice," and the second a ghost.
When I was trying to think of another person to put on a chair, I suddenly thought of Tom. Instead of showing him, I just figured I'd hint that he's slumped down in his chair covered in red paint.
When I showed the last strip of last year's Election Week to my brothers, they were wondering how Strip Supervisor would have more power than the President. I decided I'd better explain that part in this strip.
I wasn't originally intending to show Julia in the middle panel, but I just had to show her excitement when she thought everyone voted for her. So that's four straight elections she's lost! (Yes, I broke the presidential tie in 2009 by voting for Charlie.)
Three years of rejection? Yes, Julia hasn't been elected since 2007. Do you think that means Julia was president before 2007, or does it mean that 2007 is when Julia first ran for president? I'm thinking the latter. My line in the last panel wasn't that easy to write. It took several variations for me to find a line I liked.
I said what I did in the title because being president would be good for her, but bad for the rest of us. Today's strip was originally switched with tomorrow's, but I changed it to this order for a better storyline flow.
My original caption was "Julia in the morning." But then I thought of the comic strip Zits, how it also shows Jeremy (the teenager in the comic strip) having a hard time getting out of bed sometimes. So it made sense to stop focusing on one teen and extend the caption to refer to most (if not all) teens.
